The existence of slums negatively affect the population living there with high pollution levels, crime rates, and a lack of government. Slums are very dangerous and even living there can be so with the hygiene problems. 

    Firstly, pollution is a main problem in slums because of disease spread and poisoning people. An observer was seen saying that, "[Slums are] giant cesspools. Waste leaches into the water people drink and contaminates the food they eat. [Slum water] carries typhoid and other diseases that can be deadly. Overpopulation and a lack of enough space for everyone is a main factor in the pollution levels, and some people tend to put their needs above everyone else's.

    Evidently, as people realize that they live in horrible places, they decide to do something about it for themselves. This leads to crime spreading quickly."(Need a quote) The people in power can easily take advantage of the poor conditions of others and take what they want and hurt whoever doesn't see eye to eye with them. The crime rate is high enough but the government still decides to stay out of it and not help with security or other things.
